HAVE THIS MIND AMONG YOURSELVES.

Philippians 2:5–11 · October 2, 2026

Have This Mind Among Yourselves

Paul is not dropping an isolated piece of Christology into the letter. He has been pressing the Philippians toward a shared life marked by humility, unity, and concern for one another. Then he places Christ Himself before them as the controlling pattern.

For first-century hearers living in a Roman colony where status, honor, citizenship, and public standing mattered, the movement of the passage is startling. Christ does not grasp at status. He takes the form of a servant. He humbles Himself and obeys even to death on a cross, a death designed by Rome to strip a man of honor publicly.

“Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus…”

The command is therefore not simply, “Think nice thoughts about humility.” Paul is telling a congregation to adopt a way of life shaped by the self-giving obedience of Christ. The mind of Christ becomes visible in what a man is willing to surrender in order to obey God and serve others.

What are you holding onto that obedience requires you to lay down?

Do not answer abstractly. Name the thing. Then take one concrete step today.
